Translating Data into a Good Visual

A breakdown on just how potent data visualization can be.

Here’s something to chew on. The brain processes visuals in 0.25 seconds and 60,000 times faster than text. And since sharing of information has been made faster than ever thanks to the internet, the number of info in the form of visualization created has increased by 9900% since 2007.

On a separate but related note, the average person today generates information that can fit into six newspapers, every single day. And that’s not hard to believe considering that every day, 500 million tweets are posted globally. Basically, we’re all experiencing an overload of information day-in, day-out. Everybody is fighting to get their information out to the world as far as it can reach in the most efficient, most interesting and fastest way possible.

Because of this overload of data, businesses around the world have adapted to the way of dataviz (data visualization) because it’s more engaging. The interesting thing about dataviz is that it doesn’t need to be targeted at customers alone. It could also help your team understand your customers better and create something that meets their demands and expectation. And this is exactly what movie streaming titans, Netflix did.

Netflix has a mass amount of data due to its large customer base. Combining the many wonders of Big Data, which includes amongst others the analysis, curation and visualization of data, Netflix was able to create a series called “House of Cards”.

Everything about the show; from its storyline to its characters, to its actors and its trailers; was based on data the company had from its customers. Netflix knew what their customer’s favourite genres were and the time at which the site has it’s highest number of viewers. These and a combination of other things resulted in House of Cards becoming a hit (which was predicted even before the show was underway).

Lead actor of the House of Cards series, Kevin Spacey, was picked because his movies have a high number of views on Netflix.

In a Nutshell

At this very moment, your company is holding on to precious data about what your customers want. It’s just a matter of translating this data into a good visual so that your teams can work to create the next big thing for your business.
